What's involved?

Works involve constructing:

  • three roundabouts, with a network of new roads connecting to the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, Mort Street, Baillie Henderson Hospital and Hermitage Road
  • two on-ramps, enabling motorists to access the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing in both directions
  • two off-ramps, enabling eastbound and westbound motorists to exit the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing
  • a bridge, carrying the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing over Mort Street and the rail line
  • realigned entrance into Baillie Henderson Hospital off Mort Street
  • an approximately 1.1km long road, connecting Hermitage Road to the Toowoomba Waste Management Centre (TWMC), providing access for commercial vehicles.

Mort Street Connection Road

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is upgrading Mort Street from the Jellicoe Street and West Street intersection to provide a connection to the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing. The project is planned to be completed in conjunction with the completion of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing. Please refer to the TRC website for more information about the Mort Street Connection Road.

Goombungee Road

A bridge for the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing will be constructed over Goombungee Road at Harlaxton. There will be no direct connection from the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing to Goombungee Road.

Progress

Completed works

To accommodate the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, Mort Street was realigned and Hermitage Road was realigned into east and west sections in mid-2017. The realignment of Mort Street is open to traffic. Mort Street now has two new roundabouts and connects with the upgraded Tor Street intersection. This means Hermitage Road has been permanently realigned, with a cul-de-sac for the eastern section.

The new access road (via Hermitage Road east) into the TWMC is open and the existing road alignment (via Bedford Street) has been permanently closed to TWMC traffic.

We have completed the following works as part of the realignment:

  • constructing an approximately 1.9km long section of road, connecting Mort Street with the western section of Hermitage Road, Tor Street and Ganzer Road
  • upgrading the intersection of Tor Street and Hermitage Road
  • constructing two roundabouts, with a network of new roads connecting to the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, Mort Street, Baillie Henderson Hospital and Hermitage Road
  • realigning the entrance into Baillie Henderson Hospital off Mort Street
  • constructing an approximately 1.1km long road, connecting Hermitage Road to the TWMC for commercial vehicles access.

The section of Hermitage Road east of the TWMC remains accessible from the northern end of Mort Street. There is a U-turn bay where Hermitage Road (east) meets the TWMC access road, enabling heavy vehicles to turn around safely.

Upcoming works

Works for the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing alignment and Mort Street interchange are continuing.

Works still to be completed for the Mort Street interchange include constructing:

  • two on-ramps, enabling motorists to access the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing in both directions
  • two off-ramps, enabling eastbound and westbound motorists to exit the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing
  • a roundabout on the northern side of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, as part of the entry and exit point for the eastbound lanes of the toll road
  • a bridge over the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, connecting eastbound traffic with the local traffic network
  • a bridge carrying the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing over Mort Street and the rail line.
