An interchange will be constructed at the Gore Highway, Athol as part of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing.

Building the Gore Highway interchange

Works in this area involve constructing:

  • one on-ramp, enabling eastbound motorists to enter the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing
  • two single-lane off-ramps, enabling motorists to exit onto the Gore Highway in both directions
  • a single-span bridge, taking the westbound off-ramp over the Gore Highway
  • two six metre high retaining walls and embankments, on either side of the Gore Highway, to support the single-span bridge.

Newton Road
To accommodate the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, Newton Road at Athol will be permanently realigned into east and west sections. The western section of Newton road will remain accessible from the Gore Highway and Wainwright Road intersection. A 270m long connection will provide the eastern section of Newton Road with direct access to the Gore Highway. The eastern and western sections of Newton Road will be permanently closed where the road meets the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing.

Wainwright Road
Wainwright Road at Athol will be permanently realigned into north and south sections to accommodate the westbound off-ramp (towards Pittsworth and Millmerran). A cul-de-sac will be installed where the southern section of Wainwright Road meets the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing. The northern section will be permanently closed however will remain accessible from the Gore Highway. Access to the southern section of Wainwright Road from the Gore Highway will be via Wyreema-Athol Road.

Construction updates

Works to construct the Gore Highway interchange are anticipated to occur from mid-2017 until mid-2018. The permanent access changes on Newton Road and Wainwright Road will occur before construction of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing commences in this area. Local residents will be kept updated about construction time frames.
