As part of work on the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, a grade separated interchange will be constructed at the Warrego Highway, Charlton.

Building the Warrego Highway west interchange

This involves constructing:

  • two on-ramps, enabling motorists to access the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing in both directions
  • two off-ramps, enabling eastbound and westbound motorists to exit the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing
  • a bridge, taking the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing over the Warrego Highway
  • three signalised intersections to allow road users to safely turn in and out of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, Nass Road and Wirth Road.

Construction of the Warrego Highway west interchange will also involve permanently closing Willett Road at its intersection with the Warrego Highway. Access for local Willett Road residents and Toowoomba Speedway visitors will continue via Wirth Road.

Construction updates

12 Super T girders have been installed and bridge deck concrete pours have commenced to form the bridge deck for the two-lane, two-span bridge over the Warrego Highway.

Large concrete pours are continuing for the bridge deck and parapets (concrete barrier constructed on both sides of the bridge for the safety of road users crossing over and under the bridge).

When the bridge deck is completed, Nexus will commence preparing the final road surface on the bridge including asphalting, installing the bridge expansion joints and line marking.

Intersection works at the Warrego Highway-Wirth Road-Nass Road intersection are planned in early 2018. Once complete, this will allow motorists to safely access the new Nass Road decoupling yard, and Willett and Wirth Road destinations through traffic lights.

The existing east and west-bound heavy vehicle decoupling yards adjacent to the Warrego Highway at Charlton are expected to be closed in early 2018, following the opening of the new Nass Road decoupling yard.
